Ovarian Cysts and PCOD
A cyst is a fluid filled sac that can form anywhere in the body. Ovarian cysts are these fluid filled sacs that grow on or within the ovaries. There are two classifications of ovarian cysts: (1) functional cysts and (2) non-functional cysts. Functional cysts usually form during the menstrual cycle while non-functional cysts can form at anytime.
PCOD or PCOS stands for Polycystic Ovary Disease / Syndrome. PCOD is very similar to ovarian cysts in that it is a condition in which the ovaries do not properly release mature eggs.

Previous Miscarriage
The good news is that just because a woman has a miscarriage does not mean she is doomed to repeat it. A woman who conceives after having a single miscarriage has an 85% chance of carrying the pregnancy to term and having a healthy baby. However, if a woman is over 35 years of age and has had more than one miscarriage, then her chances of carrying a baby to term are dramatically decreased.

Pelvic Inflamatory Disease
Pelvic inflammatory disease or PID is a condition in which a woman’s reproductive organs become infected. This infection spreads from the cervix up towards the uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries, and all the other surrounding structures. Additionally, bacteria infect the fallopian tubes causing inflammation. This inflammation results in normal tissue becoming scarred.

Sexual Transmitted Diseases (STDs)
STD stands for sexually transmitted disease. This name implies exactly what they are, diseases that are contracted via sexual contact. This contact can be vaginal, oral, or anal. Not all sexually transmitted disease will affect fertility; however there are some that will. The two most common STD’s that are known for causing infertility are Chlamydia and gonorrhea.

Birth Control
When a woman is taking birth control she is unable to conceive, however once she has stopped using birth control, conception may not be easy. Every woman’s body is different and will react differently. It is recommended that a woman stop taking her birth control about a year before she is ready to start trying to conceive so that her body can readjust to the lack of hormones.

Conceiving after 35
Conception is a process by which a male sperm fertilizes a female egg. However, a pregnancy will not occur unless this fertilized egg implants (attaches) to the uterine wall. If every piece of this puzzle doesn’t occur exactly as it should, then it can become very difficult for a woman to become pregnant. One of the most common issues with conception in women is age.
