Getting pregnant and being pregnant can be a time of excitement but also a time of confusion and feeling overwhelmed. There are so many articles and experts out there telling women what they should and shouldn’t be doing while trying to conceive or once you have fallen pregnant.
One of the most researched and asked topics surrounding pregnancy is what women should take during the pregnancy process. Some fish oil tablets contain mercury- this is dangerous especially during pregnancy. Fish containing mercury is found in oceans, lakes and streams that have been contaminated from common industrial processes and polluted with mercury. Mercury and pollutants become deposited in the fish with larger fish containing more due to their digestive system.
Pregnant women are advised to avoid fish known to have high levels of mercury. Mercury crossed the placenta and goes straight to the brain and nervous system. This has been shown to damage the nervous system of a developed foetus causing them to suffer from sensory impairment such as vision, hearing and speech.
While there is a downside there is also a major plus. Fish oil tablets contain DHA and EPA which are essential fatty acids. Scientist and medical professionals all agree that these essential nutrients are needed to ensure a healthy balance and also are linked to preventing medical problems.
It is a shame I have to be so brief as there is so much to talk about that I have not even mentioned! Like anything to do with your health it is important to be educated on what you are taking, it’s benefits and disadvantages. Once you feel you have enough information then you make a decision.
